Algebra I
Students build on the foundational concepts presented in Grades K-8. Algebraic thinking and symbolic reasoning play a critical role in algebra. Since functions provide the foundation of Algebra I and Algebra II; this course uses a "function" approach as it provides the student opportunities to solve problems in real-life situations. The study of functions, equations and their relationships is mental to all of mathematics. Students perceive functions and perceive the connections between algebra and geometry and use the tools of one to help solve problems in the other. Students use concrete, pictorial, dependent upon a graphing calculator, but it is used extensively throughout the year.

This class is critical for young people ready to graduate into the real world. The first semester consists of Personal Finance topics as covered in Dave Ramsey's Personal Finance by has Mrs. Devine's unique twist of preparing to "Move Out". Answer the critical questions of how much does an apartment cost, what's in a lease, how much does setting up an apartment cost, renters insurance, and expected expenses. How do you purchase a used car? Car insurance and common mistakes students make. The second-semester deals with career choice, resume writing for a skills-based resume, jobs that do not require a four-year degree but pay as well, interviewing skills, and interview follow-up. How to apply for the FASFA (October), how to apply at AVC and other universities, Rate My Professor, and scholarships for those attending college and those who wish to go to trade school. Who are you?? Personality Plus and the 7-Habits of Highly Successful People (not the ten version - we are preparing to be adults) will be read with the workbook. Mrs. Devine has been teaching this class for several years and has the real-life experience of teens in her family, some in college some not. Nothing but the truth here!

In this elementary class, we will meet live via Zoom where, "in the round"fashion, we will introduce and participate in various theatre experiences including games, puppet theatre, readers theatre, and character plays. Through these activities, students will develop self-awareness and imagination.
If/when we can, we'll begin meeting in person and work toward the presentation of our "mini-production" (see **NOTE** below). If circumstances don't p[ermit us to meet in person, this class will still allow students to lay the foundation for important life skills such as thinking independently, working collaboratively, and communicating openly with true emotion - while having tons of fun!
**NOTE** We are looking for elementary students who can commit to faithful attendance to this elective class in order to learn the basics of presentational and performance skills and prepare to present a "mini-stage production" second semester. Faithful attendance to class is helpful both in teaching students the value (and responsibility)of being part of a team, as well as being key to a successful production.
